The Code for Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) is a recognised standard in the UK for key elements of design and construction which contribute to the effect a new home has on the environment.
Requirements
From September 2010 all new dwellings in Wales will require a code assessment as part of the planning application with the design providing a minimum of code 3 pre design stage assessment and 6 credits in the Dwelling Emission Rate assessment.
The Code covers nine environmental and sustainable heading:
- Energy and Carbon Dioxide Emissions
- Water
- Materials
- Surface water run-off
- Waste
- Pollution
- Health and well-being
- Management
- Ecology
Code rules
Dwellings can achieve a rating from one to six. One star is the base level and six stars is the highest level. Zero carbon homes are identified as code level 6. A zero carbon home is a home that produces zero net emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from all energy use.
There are mandatory standards set by the Code for energy, surface water run-off and water. The standard applicable are variable according to the level of code compliance to be achieved by the dwelling.
This means that a licensed Code for Sustainable Homes assessor will be required to produce design stage and post construction stage assessments.
